Adjunct professor Fraser Hill is recognised as a specialist in veterinary pathology in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. He is a member of the Australia and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Sheep Medicine and Pathology as well as a fellow of the Australia and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Anatomic Pathology.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science with distinction from Massey University in New Zealand, he entered rural veterinary practice and worked with a range of farmed and companion animal species for six years.
This was followed by three years at a research station investigating the suitability of swamp buffalo and alpacas for New Zealand farming conditions.
For the past 23 years he has worked in veterinary diagnostic pathology laboratories, both government and commercial operations.
He has particular experience and expertise in the diagnosis of Bovine Viral Diarrhoea virus in cattle, working for the past ten years on a project to control the disease in New Zealand cattle.
For the past six years he has been the New Zealand Veterinary Associations member of the Australasian Committee for the Registration of Veterinary Specialists, tasked with assessing the suitability of applicants to work as veterinary specialists.
In addition to refereed publications, he has published numerous articles on aspects of veterinary diagnostics for veterinary practitioner continuing education.
In 2016, he was awarded the prestigious Alan Baldry memorial prize for a veterinarian making a significant contribution to the sheep and cattle industry of New Zealand.
