Collaboration with WWF in the Gei Wai management at Mai Po Nature Reserve

Gei wai (literally means a pond enclosed by an earthen dyke) is a traditionally managed intertidal shrimp pond. Shrimp farming at gei wai is an extensive culture system with multiple water channels running through the pond. Many juvenile shrimps are drained into gei wai, while renewed sources of nutrient enter the ponds as well to sustain the vitality of shrimps.

Recently, poor management of shrimp cultivation in many parts of Asia causes adverse impacts, including the loss of mangrove and soil, water salinization, overexploitation of wild stock of shrimp, destruction of natural seed resources, the abuse of chemicals, etc. It is worth considering a sustainable aquaculture of shrimp in Hong Kong.

In collaboration with WWF, we will promote the sustainability of shrimp aquaculture by integrating modern commercial practices with traditional gei wai, including:

  • The research of production cycle of gei wai shrimps and fishes and the biodiversity at gei wai;
  • To conduct water quality of the gei wai;
  • To build up fish health programme at gei wai;
  • To manage the ecosystem of gei wai;
  • To introduce proper artificial feeds;
  • To develop and apply better husbandry and veterinary care of shrimp aquaculture; and
  • To release the shrimp fry of native species.
