A study co-led by Chair Professor Wing Ho Yung from the Department of Neuroscience (NS) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and Professor Ke Ya from the School of Biomedical Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine (CU Medicine) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) reveals how the brain manages neural resources during multitasking.
Tracking individual neurons in mouse models during dual-task training, researchers found multitasking is not constrained by a fixed processing bottleneck. Instead, the brain initially balances resource competition with neural coordination. Through learning, it recruits task-specific neurons and separates task representations to enable parallel processing. These biological insights could help improve multitasking in artificial intelligence. These findings have been published in the leading neuroscience journal Neuron.
