ABSTRACT

How does one distribute points "uniformly" on the surface of the sphere? This question has long inspired mathematicians. Its simplicity and the difficulty to solve it makes this problem a great challenge and during the last decades it has attracted much attention within the scientific community. In this talk we overview some history and motivations, and finally we show a recent result and its relation with the 7th problem in Smale's list of problems for the XXI Century.
