CityU Tiger Featured Talk: Navigating the World of Statistics: Unveiling Truth and Fostering Critical Thinking

The Talent and Education Development Office (TED) hosted an inspiring Featured Talk delivered by the passionate and energetic speaker, Professor Alan Wan, Head of the Department of Management Sciences. During the captivating talk, Professor Wan shared the origins of statistics, providing profound examples and statistical jokes that engaged the audience. His intention was to encourage participants to embrace critical thinking, nurture intellectual curiosity, and maintain an open-mindedness to expand knowledge and perspectives. Professor Wan illustrated a practical application of statistics in real-world scenarios through the Centa-City Index launched in September 1999, a collaboration project between Centaline Property Agency Ltd. and CityUHK. He introduced the basic framework of the Centa-City Index, highlighting its relevance and impact on the property market.

The talk was concluded with an interactive Question-and-Answer session, during which Professor Wan offered a piece of insightful life advice: “To learn to be a decent and responsible human being”. One of the participants expressed their gratitude to TED for organising such an enlightening and entertaining event.
