Professor Alex Jen Kwan-yue is currently Chair Professor of Chemistry, School of Energy and Environment, and Department of Materials Science and Engineering at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK). He is a renowned scientist and eminent leader, who served as Provost from December 2016 to November 2020 to spearhead the University’s academic development. He received a Bachelor's Degree of Science from National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania, the United States (US).
Professor Jen’s interdisciplinary research focuses on organic/hybrid functional materials and devices for photonics, energy, sensors and nanomedicine. He is a distinguished researcher with a well-cited publication record. He has co-authored over 1,000 publications and delivered over 650 invited presentations. He has over 85,000 citations and an h-index of 150, and he is the co-inventor of 63 patents and invention disclosures. He has been listed among the top 2% of the world’s most highly cited scientists since 2020, according to metrics compiled by Stanford University. He was named by Thomson Reuters a "Highly Cited Researcher" from 2014 to 2022 and one of the "World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds" in 2015 and 2016 in the field of materials science. He was also selected the sole recipient of "CityUHK’s Outstanding Research Award" in 2021.
Owing to his extraordinary contributions, Professor Jen was elected an Academician of the European Academy of Sciences and the Washington State Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow by several professional societies, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Materials Research Society, etc. He has demonstrated strong capability in technology transfer and fundraising, and was the Founder of the Institute of Advanced Materials for Energy at the University of Washington.
