Professor Zhang Hua is Chair Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Department of Materials Science and Engineering of City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK). He also serves as Director of the Hong Kong Institute for Clean Energy at CityUHK. He obtained a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree at Nanjing University, and completed his Doctor of Philosophy with Professor Liu Zhongfan at Peking University, China.

His research focuses on phase engineering of nanomaterials and epitaxial growth of heterostructures for various applications. By widening the applications of nanomaterials, his team is playing a significant role in bringing about transformational changes for a better life.

Professor Zhang has published over 600 papers. His research had been cited over 144,400 times (Web of Science) and over 162,700 times (Google Scholar), and he has an h-index of 189 and 199, respectively. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, United Kingdom in 2014, Academician of the Asia Pacific Academy of Materials in 2015, and a Foreign Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences in 2020. He has been listed among the top 2% of the world's most highly cited scientists since 2020, according to metrics compiled by Stanford University. Based on data from Thomson Reuters, he was listed among the “Highly Cited Researchers” in Materials Science in 2014, and in Chemistry and Materials Science in 2015-2025; and as one of the 17 and 19 “Hottest Researchers of Today” in the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds in 2014 and 2015, respectively. His numerous awards include the “Nanyang Award for Research Excellence” (2011), the “SMALL Young Innovator Award” (2012), the “World Cultural Council Special Recognition Award” (2013), the “ACS Nano Lectureship Award” (2015), the “Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholar Award” by the University of Wollongong, Australia (2016), CityUHK’s “The President’s Award” (2021), Croucher Senior Research Fellowships (2025), and Bank of China Science and Technology Innovation Prize (2025).
