The "Traditional Design and Practices for Building Chinese Wooden Arch Bridges" was inscribed on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2009 and was successfully transferred to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2024. Mr. SU Xudong and his team were involved in the nomination process from start to finish. In this lecture, Mr. SU will share that journey and explain the core techniques behind traditional wooden arch bridge construction, including site selection principles and construction procedures. He will also introduce some of the most representative covered wooden arch bridges, including Baixiang, Qiancheng, and Wanan Bridges in Pingnan County.
Following the presentation, the team members will use timber components to demonstrate the technique of assembling the wooden arch. Interested audience members will be invited to participate in hands-on activities to deepen their understanding of this living craft.
