Concerns

Please contact our team directly for support when the need comes. We shall assist you to fulfill the needs within a minimum amount of time.

Our instructional designer is here to support effective use of e-learning technologies in a pedagogically sound manner. Please contact us directly for more information and assistance.

Canvas does not support e-mail sending. Instead, user may communicate via the 'Conversations' tool which is an internal messaging system. According to settings of individual users, notification e-mails could be sent out to the message recipients with 'City University of Hong Kong - Canvas <notifications@instructure.com>' as the sender. Please understand that the e-mail is a notification from Canvas, not exactly an e-mail sent from your student. This communication practice is happening in Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social media services.

As the unified LMS at CityU, over 85% of the Canvas course sites are active during a regular semester. Of course, we understand that Canvas is unable to satisfy all teaching and learning needs. Hence, additional tools such as Turnitin and Panopto are integrated into CityU's Canvas and the e-Learning Team continuously sources new tools to fulfill different pedagogical approaches such as flipped classroom. Colleagues are welcome to contact us directly to voice out your specific requirements so solutions can be worked out.

Canvas' default letter grade schema does not have A+ so it is not applicable at CityU. Unfortunately, we are unable to change the default. Before the vendor provides a better solution, colleagues may add their own schema (https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-10313-415257090) or select the one named "Sample Letter Grade" (https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-12906-415257089). Please contact us for details.

The Office of Education Development and Gateway Education (EDGE) provides faculty development opportunities online and in person. Please visit their website (click here) for more information.

Canvas workshops are provided to teachers before the start of every semester by the e-Learning Team. They cover basic tools (Jump Start), plagiarism prevention (with the use of Turnitin), and online assessments. Please visit the page for the coming workshops. There is also a self-access online training course inside Canvas at https://canvas.cityu.edu.hk/enroll/P6WMND for CityU teachers.

Suggestions

Suggestions to be handled by the e-Learning Team

The e-Learning Team and the CityU library can help connect teachers to publishers in search of e-textbooks' availability for different subjects. Please contact us if you need any e-textbooks.

The e-Learning Team provides technical support to students directly when they encounter issues during submission.

Grammarly Premium, which includes a self-access plagiarism checker for essays, will be made available to more CityU users.

Research students' supervisors may request RO to provide iThenticate user accounts to their students to scan research papers and proposals for similarity check.

The e-Learning Team introduces new features and tools to enhance flipped learning on regular basis. Panopto is being piloted to simplify pre-class instructional video production. uReply is available for classroom assessment activities. Starting this summer, Poll Everywhere will be piloted and compared with uReply so that users can help to determine which to adopt as the centrally supported polling tool at CityU in the future. Please contact us for details of all the new features. Suggestions on adoption of other tools are highly welcome.

Promoting the use of Canvas for teaching and learning is the duty of the e-Learning Team. We take every opportunity in relevant events organized by various departments and offices to reach out to CityU teachers.

Canvas workshops are provided to teachers before the start of every semester.

The e-Learning Team is trying the best to provide e-learning services to the City community. Nevertheless, the team consists of only 3 regular staff members and another 3 are on projects. Your help to inform the senior management about the demands in e-learning support will be highly appreciated.

Please contact our team directly for more information.

Poll Everywhere will be available to CityU user starting summer 2019. CityU users may sign into Poll Everywhere with CityU EID and password directly. The service also integrates with CityU Canvas. Please contact the e-Learning Team if you would like to try it out.
