The Department is very unique in a multidisciplinary nature by integrating Chemistry, Biology and Environmental Science. Staff of the Department have a broad range of research interests include Synthetic Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Biological Chemistry, Computational Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry. With a wealth of talent and a dedication to applied research, students can conduct advanced research and study under supervision of our faculty members who are actively working in their respective research areas.

Aims

This programme aims to train and produce graduates with an understanding of advanced developments and highly marketable specialist skills in the disciplines of chemistry, biology and environmental science, and to meet local and regional requirements in the industrial, commercial, government or education sectors.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to:

  • develop intellectual competence necessary to successful academic and professional work;
  • contribute to the generation and development of knowledge in their respective fields through independent, original, and innovative research;
  • demonstrate specialist subject knowledge and a high level of transferable skills with an emphasis on discovery-based element.

Programme Requirements

  • Coursework Requirements
MPhil Students required to take 7 credit units (including at least 2 credit units of research methodology and ethics course at postgraduate level).
PhD Students are required to fulfill the following course requirements within their study period:
  • 14 credit units (including at least 9 credit units of core courses and at least 2 credit units of research methodology and ethics course at postgraduate level)
  • 1 credit unit compulsory course (SG8001 Teaching Students: First Steps)
  • Training on Research Integrity (CITI Programme)

 
  • Qualifying Examination (QE)
    PhD students are required to take and pass a written qualifying examination in compliance to the regulations or guidelines as set by the Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies (SGS). The QE aims to test students’ knowledge of major subject area and assess their readiness to conduct research in their specific research discipline.
     
  • Qualifying/Annual Report Submission
    Students are required to submit qualifying report and annual report in compliance to the regulations or guidelines as set by the Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies (SGS). Such regulations and guidelines are accessible via the guidebook located at SGS website.
     
  • Thesis
    A MPhil thesis should present the results of research investigation, give evidence of a sound understanding of the area of study, its context and applicability, and make a contribution to knowledge.

    A PhD thesis, in addition to the above, should make a substantial original contribution to knowledge in the subject area concerned.

Admission Requirements

Applicants should satisfy the following minimum entrance requirements:


MPhil:
  • hold a relevant bachelor’s degree with first or second class honours (or equivalent qualification) from a recognized university.
PhD:
  • hold a bachelor’s degree with first class honours (or equivalent qualification) from a recognized university;
  • hold a master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognized university;
  • hold a higher degree by research (for equivalent qualification) from a recognized university; or
  • be a current MPhil student in the University who seeks transfer to PhD Candidature.
