Course Aims | ||||||||
This course offers a comprehensive exploration of classical Chinese fiction and "xiqu戲曲" (traditional Chinese drama), through a dual lens of theoretical inquiry and practical learning. Students will engage in in-depth study of notable writers and selected masterpieces, situating these works within their historical, social, and intellectual contexts. Supported by a Teaching Start-up Grant (TSG), the curriculum is uniquely enhanced by integrating experiential learning in Chinese opera performance, specifically Kunqu Opera, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage renowned for its performance of late-Ming Chuanqi drama. Through in-class instructions led by professional practitioners, students will learn to perform selected opera excerpts, bridging the gap between backstage and onstage. | ||||||||
