This course offers a comprehensive exploration of classical Chinese fiction and "xiqu戲曲" (traditional Chinese drama), through a dual lens of theoretical inquiry and practical learning. Students will engage in in-depth study of notable writers and selected masterpieces, situating these works within their historical, social, and intellectual contexts. Supported by a Teaching Start-up Grant (TSG), the curriculum is uniquely enhanced by integrating experiential learning in Chinese opera performance, specifically Kunqu Opera, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage renowned for its performance of late-Ming Chuanqi drama. Through in-class instructions led by professional practitioners, students will learn to perform selected opera excerpts, bridging the gap between backstage and onstage. 
Students will be provided with options for their assessment, either written assignments on Chinese fiction, or performance analysis and demonstration of xiqu. Ultimately, the course aims to cultivate a profound application for China's vibrant cultural traditions while promoting creative well-being and holistic education.
