This course explores the human body as a central medium for media worlding - the processes through which worlds are constructed, mediated, and experienced across physical, cinematic, and virtual environments. Rather than treating media as merely representational tools, the course approaches worlding as an embodied, technical, and political practice through which realities, identities, and social relations are produced and negotiated.

Combining critical inquiry with hands-on experimentation, the course introduces key perspectives from queer theory, feminist theory, and posthumanist thought alongside practical training in mold making, 3D scanning, performance, expanded cinema, and avatar creation in Unreal Engine. Through these theoretical and technical frameworks, students will investigate how bodies are translated, extended, distorted, and reconfigured across material and digital spaces.

Structured around a series of workshops, discussions, presentations, and project-based exercises, the course encourages students to develop artistic strategies that engage the body not only as a subject of representation, but also as a site of mediation, transformation, and world-making. By the end of the semester, students will produce a final project that critically and creatively explores the relationship between embodiment, media technologies, and contemporary forms of virtuality.

Enrolment for SM6311 depends on School's permission, which will only be granted if the topic is essentially different from that covered in SM5316, SM5347 offered in or before Semester B 2025/26 and SM6327.
