Programme Aims

This programme aims to develop the best creative writers in Asia which will cater to the increasing demand for a professional English Creative Writing MFA in the market place in the region, and to staff companies involved in the arts, advertising, media, and public relations in Hong Kong’s creative industries sector, a sector projected to grow rapidly in the coming years. This programme is as well the first Creative Writing MFA program in Asia to be offered in a flexible and low-residency mode and which has a specific Asian discovery focus.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to:
  1. Produce a substantial body of creative work of publishable quality in their chosen genre; 
  2. Revise and edit their own work with the aid of feedback from other writers;
  3. Discuss and analyze key works of contemporary literature in their chosen genre and evaluate in them the use of various literary techniques and devices;
  4. Document and describe their own creative process with a high degree of sophistication;
  5. Critique both creative and critical writing at an intellectually sophisticated level, qualifying them to work as professional writers, editors or readers in the publishing industry. 
  6. Give constructive feedback to other writers at the level of a teacher of creative writing at the tertiary level;
  7. Work as writers with other writers in an atmosphere of commitment, mutual support and artistic ambition.

* MFA students wishing to use these courses as an alternative course to fulfil a degree requirement must seek and be granted permission by the Department of English.


3. Additional Notes:
In order to complete the normal program of study, students are expected to complete four semesters of distance mentoring comprising 6 credits each of creative writing and directed reading/critical writing in sequence (except for the final semester of the 6-credit creative thesis which is only creative writing) and attend at least two summer and three mini residencies (EN 6301, 6302, 6303 6304, 6305, 6314 and 6315), unless permission is sought and granted by the Department of English for an alternative mode of study to fulfil the residency attendance requirement.
