Martin Zhu shares inspiring journey at research degree student orientation 2025

Following the successful Master's Student Orientation, the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies held another engaging Research Degree Student (RPg) Orientation on 13 September. In collaboration with the Alumni Relations Office, the event featured alumni sharing session by Prof Martin Zhu, a Doctor of Philosophy graduate from the School of Energy and Environment.

Martin, CEO and Co-founder of i2Cool, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Management of the College of Business at CityUHK and a member of the Green Technology and Finance Development Committee of the Hong Kong SAR Government, returned to campus to inspire a new cohort of researchers.

Hailing from Guangzhou, Martin shared how his childhood experiences with extreme heat sparked his interest in cooling technologies—a passion that eventually led him to pursue doctoral research at CityUHK. His academic journey laid a strong foundation for his entrepreneurial ventures. He delighted the audience with updates about the rapid growth of his business, which began as a startup at CityUHK. From humble beginnings, i2Cool has expanded to nearly a hundred employees and has established a presence on major e-commerce platforms in both Hong Kong and mainland China. Most excitingly, he announced plans to open a new overseas factory soon, aiming to bring sustainable cooling solutions to international markets and alleviate heat-related challenges around the world.

In a speech titled “Martin Zhu: From Campus to Community – A Scientist’s Journey in Sustainability”, he reflected on his incredible path from a curious child on a rooftop to an entrepreneur. He concluded with a powerful message: “From a rooftop kid to where I am today, I believe dreams can grow into limitless possibilities!”

His story stands as a testament to how passion, innovation, and education can come together to create meaningful change. The University takes pride in alumni like Martin, who embody social responsibility and serve as role models for future innovators.

We look forward to witnessing more inspiring journeys from CityUHK alumni and students, who contribute their wisdom and vision to the global community.
