Applications of Lattice Boltzmann Method
Abstract:
Lattice Boltzmann method was introduced over a decade ago as an alternative to traditional method of computational fluid dynamics. This relatively new method has several intrinsic features over conventional ones, namely, easy treatment of boundary condition, straightforward implementation of parallel computing. Furthermore, the physical foundation of the models is quite clear and based on the first principles and the mathematical tool to link to large scale dynamical equations (Navier-Stokes equations and similar ones) is rather classic- the Chapman-Enskog expansion. Extensions to treat more complicated physical phenomena include flows through porous media, multiphase flows, flows with particle suspension, reaction-diffusion induced pattern formations, magnetohydrodynamics, non-Newtonian fluid flows (blood flows) and many more. The most successful application of Lattice Boltzmann Method in industries should be the application in automobile design: aerodynamics and aero-acoustics simulations, developed by Exa Corp. In this talk, we will present the state of the art of lattice Boltzmann method after a brief outline of its theory, the focus will be put on the theoretical and practical applications. We will also point out some limitations and possible solutions.
Biography:
Professor QIAN obtained the bachelor Degress in Engineering of Aerodynamics and Aero-engine from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1984 and the PhD degree in statistical physics from Ecole Normale Superieure (Physics Department) of University of Paris VI (University of Pierre and Marie Curie) in 1990. The basic works include: discrete velocity models with total conservation laws for the Boltzmann equation. The exact solutions of such models were found. For high speed flows, new models have been studied and benchmark problems have been tested. He has worked as faculty and adjunct faculty at Columbia University, Princeton University and Johns Hopkins University.
