Call for Proposals - Teaching Development Grant (TDG) / Teaching Start-Up Grant (TSG) 2022/23

Call for Proposals

Dear Colleagues,

The University Grants Committee (UGC) has been allocating the Teaching Development and related grants (TDGs) to local institutions since two decades ago, to encourage institutions to adopt innovative approaches in teaching, to improve the learning environment for students and to promote professional development of teaching staff. In addition, the Teaching Start-Up Grants (TSGs) have been made available since 2012 especially for new faculties joining the University. Projects funded by the Grants are required and expected to produce outputs on demonstrated and direct teaching and learning benefits. Equally important are the projects’ emphasis in support of the incorporation of problem-based learning and research elements to equip students with the tools to find creative solutions to real-world problems.

In order to facilitate project investigators to maximize the positive impact and contributions to CityU's teaching and learning environment, the TDGs and TSGs are now calling for proposals for the Semester B 2022/23 exercise.
The funding ceiling for TDGs is HK$240,000 for each project. Projects involving overseas collaboration may request up to HK$270,000 for each project. With strong justifications, an additional HK$50,000 is available for projects with the adoption of Virtual Teaching and Learning (VTL).
The funding ceiling for TSGs is HK$120,000 for each project. Colleagues who have joined the University in Semester B 2020/21 (1 January 2021) and thereafter, and who have not been awarded a TSG, are eligible to apply.

Proposals that demonstrate teaching benefits, innovations and deliverables in general terms rather than being discipline-specific will be considered with higher priority.

In addition, the TDG Approval Panel agreed the use of the TDG budget for the deployment of research students in 2018-19 (initiated by the Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies (SGS) followed by liaising with the Finance Office), in the form of studentship with condition that the concerned research students shall work on the TSG/ TDG projects. Regarding the recruitment of research students and studentship arrangements, please refer to  the SGS’s webpage for details.

Please visit the TED website for application details. To apply, please use the appropriate TDG or TSG application forms to submit a brief proposal to <ted@cityu.edu.hk> on or before 3 March 2023. Application will be assessed by the Teaching Development Grants Approval Panel. Results will be announced by end of April 2023. Applicants with on-going TDG/TSG projects do not need to re-apply.

A briefing session is scheduled for 7 February 2023 (Tuesday) at 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm (Room B5-117, Yeung Kin Man Academic Building) to answer questions you may have about the Grants application. Interested colleagues please contact us at ted@cityu.edu.hk.
