Internship, Visa & Period of Stay

Expand All Collapse All
Can I take up an internship during my study at CityU?

It depends on your mode of study, study duration and programme requirements.

Please see Part-time Work & Internship for details.

How can I obtain a no-objection letter for taking an internship in Hong Kong?

Full-time degree-seeking students at the Bachelor’s level and above (EXCLUDING exchange and visiting students) may accept a study/curriculum-related internship for up to one academic year, or one-third of the normal duration of the relevant full-time academic programme, whichever is shorter.

A separate ‘no objection letter’ (NOL) on the internship will be issued when your student visa/entry permit is granted, and this NOL for the internship is normally valid for one year only. Renewal of NOL will be done by the University for eligible students. If students need further assistance with the application, renewal or replacement of NOL, please consult with GEO via geovisa@cityu.edu.hk.

How can I get a travel visa to mainland China?
  • You can apply for a travel visa to the mainland of China through the travel agent ""China Travel Service (CTS)"". Single entry, double entry and multi-entry visas are available depending on your need. The nearest branch of CTS is at Mongkok (address: Room 312, 3/F Wing Lung Bank Centre, 636 Nathan Road, Mongkok, Kowloon) or you can visit www.ctshk.com for details of other branches.
  • You may also apply directly from the Commissioner's Office of China's Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR.
I cannot complete the enrolment procedures because I was told that my student visa is not validated. What should I do?

This may be because you have entered Hong Kong as a tourist, which some passport holders are able to do without a visa.

To validate your student visa, you will need to exit and re-enter Hong Kong and present your “Notification Slip for Entry Visa / Permit” (e-Visa) to the immigration officer upon re-entry.

Only once your visa has been validated can the University formally enrol you as a student under the laws in Hong Kong.

Can I remain in Hong Kong for a while after I finish my exchange study at CityU?
  • Limit of stay: All non-local students are bound by the limit of stay stated in their student visa. Staying beyond the allowed period in Hong Kong will be considered a breach of the immigration regulations. Upon arrival and validation of your student visa, a landing slip bearing your name, travel document number, arrival date, conditions and limit of stay in Hong Kong will be issued to you. Please check and exit Hong Kong before the date stated on your landing slip.
  • Re-entry as a tourist: If you need to stay in Hong Kong after your studies, you may exit Hong Kong before your student visa expires and re-enter as a tourist. Some foreign passport holders may enter Hong Kong as a tourist on a visa-free basis. Please visit the Hong Kong Immigration Department website or the government website of your home country to determine what your visa requirements are.
Can I apply for an IANG visa to stay/work in Hong Kong after graduation?

Under the Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG), non-local students who have obtained a degree or higher qualification from a full-time, locally accredited local programme in Hong Kong can apply to stay (or return) and work in Hong Kong.

Eligible applicants can submit their applications with supporting documents via the Immigration Department's online service at the website. See Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates for details.
