Highlights of CSC Small Talk

Horizontal Rule [MAR 97]

Angela Tang

In late Semester A, Computing Services Centre (CSC) announced that Eudora Pro has been chosen as the University's new email standard. As email has become an indispensable office tool, a series of Small Talks on migrating to Eudora Pro has been arranged to provide a smooth transition.

Since Eudora Pro is a Windows-based, widely accepted and easy-to-use email software, the Small Talk only emphasizes on the differences between the old Pathworks mail and the new Eudora Pro mail, and on converting mailboxes from different email software, such as Pathworks, Netscape and Eudora Light, to the new Eudora Pro. The talk has been organised three times and may be re-run in future, if necessary.

Although our implementation of Windows 95 was completed last year, and lots of new software and new versions of existing software have been designed to take advantage of this new operating system for better performance and new/enhanced features, it has been found that there are still users who hesitate to upgrade to this new environment. To help our users catch up with the trend, "Let's go Windows 95" is another big topic for Semester B.

With CityLink Plus (please refer to the section on "Key Services and Information"), users can browse World Wide Web, send/read email, reach out to Telnet and FTP sites even when they are off campus. Knowing that new users usually experience difficulties in setting up the service on their home PCs, the talk "Getting started with CityLink Plus" has been arranged.

Besides the mentioned three main topics, other Small Talks include "Student Terminal Area - A New Look", "Taking care of your hard disk", "How to download & install programs from Internet?". For details, please keep an eye on our University Network Message Board.
