New appointments

Professor Kenneth Leung Mei-yee has been appointed as Chair Professor of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. He assumed duty on 3 August. A CityU alumnus, Professor Leung was a full Professor at the University of Hong Kong and a Fellow of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry before joining CityU. He is a well-recognised environmental scientist and a recipient of the 19th Biwako Prize for Ecology awarded by the Ecological Society of Japan and he was selected by the Asian Scientist Magazine as one of the Top 100 Asian Scientists in 2018.

Professor Theodore Zhu Yuntian has been appointed as Chair Professor of Materials Science. He assumed duty on 8 July. Before joining CityU, Professor Zhu was a Distinguished Professor at North Carolina State University. He is a Fellow of all major structural materials research societies including ASM International; American Physical Society; American Association for the Advancement of Science; Materials Research Society and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society.

Professor Wang Dongan of the Department of Biomedical Engineering has been appointed as Head of Research of Ming Wai Lau Centre for Reparative Medicine of Karolinska Institutet (KI) from 1 August. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between CityU and KI in 2018 to promote exchange of knowledge and technical approaches through joint activities.



CityU's Data Science Day

Organised by the School of Data Science (SDSC) and the Hong Kong Institute for Data Science (HKIDS) on 7 August, this online event invites Dr Lee Kai-fu, world-renowned AI scholar and entrepreneur, to deliver the keynote speech. Data Science Day will feature two technical sessions that showcase HKIDS project presentations by faculty members across CityU, as well as a panel discussion on data science for interdisciplinary research and education. The event also celebrates SDSC’s and HKIDS’s two-year anniversary. For details, visit here.



Kudos

Professor Paul Chu Kim-ho, Chair Professor in the Department of Physics, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, was awarded the Anhui Province (China) Natural Science Award (Third Class) with his project “Magnetohydrodynamic Behavior in Dense Plasma”.
