Professor Xi Chen Featured in TIME Article for EV Battery Recycling Research
Prof. Xi Chen, Assistant Professor at the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), was recently featured in TIME article, "How Recycling EV Batteries Can Power the Green Transition". The article explores the urgent need to scale up electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling to meet the surging global demand for critical minerals, especially lithium, nickel, and cobalt.
Prof. Chen, a co-author of a Stanford-led study, offers expert insights into the environmental and logistical advantages of recycling lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) over traditional mining. He highlights that current industrial recycling processes, such as pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy, still have significant room for improvement in terms of efficiency and sustainability.
“There’s plenty of room to improve and really make the process more efficient,” Prof. Chen told TIME, referring to conventional refining methods such as pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy. He also emphasized that battery recycling is “a key strategy” for managing the surge of retired batteries expected in the coming decades—highlighting its role in supporting a sustainable energy transition.
Prof. Chen’s contribution reflects SEE’s ongoing commitment to impactful research in energy and environmental innovation. His work continues to inform global conversations on clean technology and circular economic solutions.
