Prof. Benjamin Horton Shared Insights on Hong Kong’s Climate Resilience on RTHK’s Backchat Programme

RTHK Backchat Programme

Prof. Benjamin Horton, Dean of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), was recently featured on RTHK's Backchat programme, where he shared expert insights on Hong Kong’s climate resilience in the face of increasingly frequent and severe weather events.

The interview followed the issuance of two black rainstorm warnings on 5 August 2025, one of which lasted nearly 12 hours—making it the second longest on record. On the same day, the Hong Kong Observatory recorded nearly 360 millimeters of rainfall, the highest daily total for August since records began in 1884.

Prof. Horton described the record-breaking rainfall as “an incredibly powerful statement,” highlighting the growing impact of climate change on the region. He emphasized the need for continued investment in climate science, data-driven forecasting, and adaptive engineering solutions to better understand and respond to local risks. He also stressed the importance of education in building long-term resilience across communities.
