Supramolecular Electronics: From Assembly To Reactions

ABSTRACT

Employing individual molecules as conducting bridges for electrons offers opportunities when investigating quantum phenomena that are not readily accessible from experiments involving ensembles of molecules. The probing of single molecules has led, over the past few decades, to the rise of molecular electronics. Although single-supermolecule electronics (SSEs) is now an emerging field, it is not yet a well-defined area of molecular electronics. We focus our attention on providing a supramolecular-level understanding of charge transport behaviour associated with non-covalent interactions, as well as demonstrating experimental readiness of single-supermolecule electronics for potential applications. And, we are attempting to employ the single-molecule technique to demonstrate the importance of electron and electric-field catalysis at single-molecule level, in order to bridge the gap between nanoscale STM experiments and large-scale electrocatalysis.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Hongliang Chen is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and the Stoddart Institute of Molecular Science (SIMS) at Zhejiang University, where he directs the Laboratory of Supramolecular Electronics. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from China Agricultural University in 2011 and completed his Ph.D. at Peking University in 2016. Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Chen served as a Research Scientist at the Dow Chemical Company, working on functional polyurethane materials, before pursuing postdoctoral research with Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Fraser Stoddart at Northwestern University from 2018 to 2021.
In June 2021, Dr. Chen established his independent research program at Zhejiang University. His research group investigates charge transport, electromechanical coupling, and non-covalent interactions in single-molecule and supramolecular systems using scanning tunneling microscopy break-junction (STM-BJ) techniques. Dr. Chen has received several prestigious recognitions, including the National Natural Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars (NSFC), and the Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. He also served as the General Secretary of the 18th International Symposium on Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry (ISMSC 2024).
