Around 70 College of Science (CSCI) freshmen joined the College Orientation and embarked on their university journey on 26 August at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK). They were warmly welcomed by our Dean, Associate Deans and faculty members during the Orientation.

Professor Xin Wang, Dean of CSCI, described science in his welcoming speech as “a dynamic field constantly evolving, pushing boundaries, challenging assumptions, and opening doors to new possibilities”. “Science is everywhere, and your future starts here”, said Professor Wang.

Professor Wang reminded freshmen that “success goes beyond grades” and encouraged them to be empowered through hands-on experiences, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a wide range of academic and co-curricular opportunities. He hoped freshmen would embrace this journey and make the most of every opportunity. Last but not least, he assured the freshmen that CSCI faculty and staff are always there to support, provide guidance and a listening ear whenever needed.

At the College Orientation, Professor Daniel Ho, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Education), Professor Kenneth Leung, Associate Dean (Outreach and Internationalisation), Professor Andy Siu, Director of Flagship Programme, Global Research Enrichment and Technopreneurship programme (GREAT), as well as Professor Jon Lo, College Student Affairs Coordinator, shared with students many useful tips on how to plan their coming years, and where they can get academic and financial support in creating a fruitful undergraduate journey. They also introduced various local and overseas opportunities that CSCI and the University provided, such as the CityUHK X Sino Grand Challenges Scholars Program, outbound student exchange, and internship programmes.

Taking this opportunity to recognise outstanding academic performance and encourage continuous improvements in undergraduate studies, the College Dean presented the certificates and coupons of the CSCI Academic Excellence Awards to two representatives of the 2024/25 awardees in front of the freshmen.

The Dean also presented certificates to Ivan Cheung Yuk Yuen, the representative and Secretary of the Student Chapter 2024-25, to recognise and appreciate their outstanding work and commitment to the CSCI Student Chapter. Freshmen are welcome to join the Student Chapter, which was established by the College in 2021 to strengthen the sense of belonging of undergraduate students with the College.

The College of Science wishes all freshmen a fulfilling university journey ahead.
