It’s seemed a long time since I moved in Yip Yuen Yuk Hing Hall (Hall 8) in 2017. I still clearly remember when firstly got here I didn’t know anybody in the whole city except my supervisor, and I had moved into the Room101 with other three guys I didn’t know before, one from India to whom I say the first “Hi” in the campus, one senior bro giving me so much support when I’m in depression sometimes, and the last guy I encountered just few times even until he moved out of the hall in the end of my first year… Nervous and expecting.

With the time passing by, “change is inevitable… and necessary, without it we fail to move forward”, I’m getting used to the hall life, although the daily life for a research student is frequently full and dull, the activities organized by our hall master and tutors bring a lot of fun in my drab life. Starting from the welcome party I feel like this is definitely the international community, where I’m able to make friends with research student coming from all over the world, maybe we had totally distinct experience in academic and daily life before, but from now on, all of us will be confronted to the biggest problem in the following three or four years---that’s the graduation and obtaining the degree, and the same goal always put people together.

Thanks to the hiking organized by our hall, I have the chance to travel so many unbelievable tourist attraction, walking or even climbing. Looking back my first travel with our hall partners to Lo Fu Tau Country Trail in Lantau Island is absolutely the most unforgettable experience in these years, as I didn’t know the so-called difficulty level, so I just went with them without enough water or food, and most surprisingly I found that this is no road at all! And we had to climb under the bright sun at noon, some guys quitted in the half, but when we get the peak, I have to say it’s worthwhile to overcome the difficulties and only thing is noticing the star level at next time!

From that time on, so many places left my footprints, from Kowloon Bay to Yuen Long, from Po Pin Chau to Ha Pak Nai… It’s admitted that traveling and hiking are definitely not only a great way for our research students to relax ourselves and know more things about Hong Kong, but also help construct deep friendship during the process.

The inner-hall activity is also colorful, where the well-equipped common room provides the perfect place for us to show our cooking ability, no matter cook by our friends or make hotpot, we all feel like the family atmosphere, having a conversation about what happened recently or some issues in own research, eating or drinking, which I believe is actually the most memorable and chilling time for us.

Because of the professional training in table-tennis during my childhood, I’ve the strong foundation in sports, which also develops the sports habit in a long time, meanwhile, our hall offers almost all kinds of sports activities, including my favorite table-tennis and basketball, more importantly, there are many other hall mates who has the same enthusiasm in sports, as a results, we’re able to enjoy the playing sports altogether with the help of our tutors who organize and reserve the venue routinely, many thanks for their devotion! Based on the comfortable life offered by our hall, I’ve been also trying my best to do somethings and make some contributions for our great community, as a result, I join in the PEK sports team in the past two years, both in table-tennis and basketball, even though the time is limited in my study, I still take part in every training and match, and fighting with our hall mates is an extremely exciting experience, keep in encouraging partner no matter win or lose. “Don’t be afraid of failure and just keep moving forward”, this is our belief and slogan, and we definitely did it, we got the first-runner up in the PEK table-tennis and second-runner up in the basketball match last year, thanks the support from hall master, thanks for our partner.

On the other hand, I try my best to find other ways to make contributions and giving something back to my hall as well, with this thought, I take on the responsibility serving as the fire marshal in my floor, finishing the requested work during the fire drill and in daily life, besides this, I’m willing to be the volunteer if short of hands in some occasion like all kinds of party or activities…
