Miss CHAN Ka Yu

BSc in Surveying, Year 3

CHAN Ka Yu

I am a year 3 students major in surveying. In this two year, I am participating an extremely rewarding hall life, which give me a whole person development. With my hall mate, we live together as a family. We cook, play board games, do sports, share our daily life and join hall activities as a team. The hall activities provide a platform for us to know more about others. For example, the orientation night, Halloween and BBQ activity. Participating in hall life not only for the entertainment, but also experiencing a true sense of community. During the period of resident, I learnt to get along with people with diverse culture such as Korean, Japanese, Spanish and Indonesian. It helps us to understand people having different culture and background. They are kind and welcome. I taught my Korean ex-toilet mates to play mahjong, exchanging our culture and languages. Any other great opportunity to know more about non-local students is the cultural night organized by students come from specific country. For example, I could try Indonesian food and the vegetable cake is my flavorist.

In my first year at hall, I was the general secretary of 13th resident’s association and organized activities for hall residents. Besides, I help and give advices to the current resident’s association. For example, giving experience to seek sponsorship for the activity and helping the decoration of their activity. In the inter-hall competition, I was one of the group representatives of the PEK Singing Contest in 2017/18, running and basketball team in 2018/19. Those experiences are enriching my life and increasing my sense of belonging to hall 1.

Participating in the PEK football competition is another remarkable experience to me. It was my first time to play 5-aside football, which requires players to be equipped with more practical skills and tactics in order to win the game. I learnt a lot from foreign players in the team, when they showed me the skills they have. It is always great to do sports and make new friends. Words alone could not express my gratitude towards the PEK soccer tournament which bonded us closer together.

Apart from the hall contribution, I am developing my interest in my hall life. I take part in the ‘Jazz Funk Choreography’ in order to do more sports and learn dancing. It provides the opportunity for us to meet new friends with same interest. Also, I join the ‘Yoga Day’ and sometimes do stretching exercise with my roommate. This create a healthy life style and fulfill my life.

‘Hall life’ develops my interpersonal skills to keep relationship with various group including major, secondary school, hall and family. Also, I have better on my emotion and become mature because the true community give me a miniature of Hong Kong society.
