Have you ever considered working in a field outside engineering, but would want to apply your skillsets as a specialist in energy and environmental science?
A career in ESG investing might be for you. This is an area that combines classic finance (where Hong Kong has a clear competitive edge) and non-financial investment considerations such as environmental factors (this is where your knowledge comes in).
As an ESG professional, you will answer questions like “How will climate change affect my investment portfolio?”, “What are companies doing to mitigate biodiversity loss resulting from their operations?”, and “How might we assess the prevalence of forced labour in companies’ supply chains?”
Alfred Chang is an ESG equity research associate at Credit Suisse. Previously, Alfred was a manager at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. He holds an MSc in Finance from Imperial College London and a BA in Economics from Cambridge University.
