Fixing atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia is essential for sustaining life on earth. Today, nitrogenase in nature supplies half of such fixed nitrogen, while the other half is contributed by industrial Haber–Bosch process at elevated temperature and pressure. The Haber–Bosch process is not sustainable in that it uses hydrogen sourced from steam reforming of methane to reduce nitrogen, consuming huge amount of fossil fuels and co-producing massive carbon dioxide emissions.To help secure a sustainable ammonia production, SEE’s two research groups, led by Dr. Jin Shang and Prof Michael Leung, join

Dr Shauhrat S. Chopra, Assistant Professor, was invited by The Connected Cities Conference, StartmeupHK Festival 2021 to be the session moderator of "Upskilling for the future" on 27 May 2021. The Conference featured global and regional speakers from corporates, startups and the academia world to showcase a number of smart technologies including IoT, blockchain AI and data analytics to enhance a city’s liveability, workability and sustainability.

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of HKSAR Government and the Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore held a bilateral energy workshop on 11 May to strengthen energy cooperation. Dr. Yun Hau Ng, Associate Professor from SEE, presented his research on clean hydrogen generation using artificial photosynthesis approach at this Workshop. The Director of EMSD, Mr. Eric Pang, said EMSD is looking forward to introducing roadmap for carbon neutrality.

Winners of the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva 2021, including Dr. Edwin Tso who received the Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury at Inventions Geneva Evaluation Days 2021, were invited to join the Chief Executive’s Reception to congratulate the success of Hong Kong teams at the Grand Hall of Hong Kong Science Park on 17 May 2021. At the Reception, Dr. Tso explained his innovation on “An Energy-Free, Low-Cost and High Cooling Performance Passive Radiative Cooling Technology for Building Applications” to Ms.
