Researchers at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) received tremendous accolades at Inventions Geneva Evaluation Days (IGED) 2022 by winning a total of 22 awards, including one Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury, six Gold Medals, 13 Silver Medals and two Bronze Medals. Among those awarded projects, two of them are led by faculties from the School of Energy and Environment, namely Prof. Michael Leung and Dr. Edwin Tso.  Their success keenly demonstrates SEE’s outstanding research achievements.

To tackle the surge of carbon neutrality issues around the globe, CityU has spared no effort in providing new solutions for clean energy. To develop sustainable energy, faculty members and students from a range of academic units, namely, School of Energy and Environment (SEE), College of Science and College of Engineering, have worked hand in hand to accomplish the goals.

According to metrics compiled by Stanford University, fifteen SEE faculty members are listed among the top 2% of the world’s most highly cited scientists (Top 2% in the world in their own areas of specialty), reflecting the high academic standard of our faculty and our excellent research performance. CityU Virtual Undergraduate Open Day was held on 19 March 2022 (Saturday). At the event, Dr. Yun Hau Ng and Dr. Patrick Sit delivered expert talks on “Extraction of Molecular Hydrogen from Wastewater” and “Tackling the Pressing Energy Challenges: from Fundamentals to Real-life Examples” for audiences to explore the world of energy and environmental engineering.

In a recent Colloquium, Mr. Arthur Lee (Chevron Fellow and Principal Advisor, Corporate Strategy and Sustainability) described highlights from the Article 6 negotiations and several other issues that were prominently discussed at COP26 Glasgow. He will give context of the IPCC assessments in these negotiations. Further, he will weave in over two decades of my perspectives of these negotiations with the backdrop of governments’ and companies’ actions towards achieving the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement.

To connect members of the CityU community, CityU organized the “CityU Homecoming 2022” on 13 March 2022 (Sunday). SEE arranged the “SEE Homecoming – Mix and Mingle” Session particularly for SEE alumni, faculty members and students to meet and chat online. Over 30 SEE members joined the online mingling session on a sunny Sunday.

In a recent Colloquium, Mr. Thomas Wu (CEO, ASB Biodiesel Hong Kong) shared his insights on how waste oil could be handled and turn to renewable energy. The Colloquium was well received with fruitful discussion among speaker and audiences.

At the “SEE Dialogue with Professionals: Introduction to Energy Finance – Fundamental Concepts, Industry Landscape and Career Development” held on 21 January 2022, Mr. Calvin Gan, SEE Alumnus & Assistant Vice President of Global Financial Institutions Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, shared with over 100 SEE students and staff the recent trends in green finance. Case studies on renewable energy finance across regions were covered.

Hydrogen technology is one of the potential solutions in Hong Kong to address the challenges encountered in achieving carbon neutrality. Hydrogen usage is more meaningful when it is produced in a green way. Dr. Yun Hau Ng, Associate Professor of SEE, was invited to share his view and research information with the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) community on the progress and status of a new photocatalytic technology in producing green hydrogen on 9 February 2022. The webinar was attended by over 400 participants followed by a fruitful discussion.
