Prof. Sai Kishore RAVI has received the Young Scientist Award in the Global Conference for Decarbonization of Energy and Materials (GCDEM 2023) in Singapore, held from 27 to 30 December 2023.  Prof. RAVI was selected by the conference review panel for this award in recognition of his contributions in the domain of “energy harvesting and catalysis”.

Under the supervision of Prof. Edwin TSO, two talented alumni of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) have been awarded for their distinguished achievement. Mr. Choi Man Ho and Mr. Cheung Tim Yiu have won the Gold Award with the Electricity-free Cooling Technology of i2Cool Limited, a technology startup incubated by CityU HK Tech 300, at the 3rd Asia Exhibition of Innovations and Inventions Hong Kong (AEII) by the Hong Kong Exporters’ Association (HKEA).

Prof. Jung-Eun CHU, Assistant Professor of the School of Energy and Environment spoke on Extreme weather in Hong Kong at RTHK programme “Backchat” on 28 November 2023. The main contents were about collaborative research on the alarming rise in rainfall and hot nights in Hong Kong conducted by CUHK, HKU, and HKUST, and Prof. CHU was invited to explain the scientific background of how climate change can influence extreme weather.

Prof. Alicia AN (PI), along with Prof. Edwin TSO (Co-I) and Dr. Muhammad Usman FARID (Co-I), has been granted a Green Tech Fund by the Environment and Ecology Bureau, HKSAR Government. Their project, titled “Thermally-integrated water desalination — electrolysis system for clean hydrogen generation”, has received funding of HK$4.14 million for a duration of two years. Their project aims to develop a highly efficient, thermally integrated membrane distillation (MD) — anion exchange electrolysis (AEMEL) system.

The School of Energy and Environment (SEE) is pleased to announce that Crystal Climate Charity Foundation has made a generous donation for establishing the “Crystal Climate Charity Foundation Scholarships” (晶苑氣候慈善基金獎學金) to recognize academically outstanding undergraduate students majoring in Energy Science and Engineering or Environmental Science and Engineering of the School from the 2023/24 academic year.

Prof. Edwin Tso, Associate Professor of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) and our PhD alum, Dr. Martin Zhu were interviewed by HOY TV regarding their development of passive radiative cooling paint (PRCP) for building applications. On 8 and 10 November 2023, the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) Student Chapter, led by Prof. Edwin TSO, organized a visit to O·PARK1. The engineers at O·PARK1 provided us with an insightful introduction to the advanced techniques employed in the recovery process of organic resources. This visit allowed students to witness firsthand the practical implementation of the Hong Kong government’s sustainable waste management and recycling initiatives.

Prof. Alicia AN’s group published a research paper entitled “Nano-confined Supramolecular Assembly of Ultrathin Crystalline Polymer Membranes for High-Performance Nanofiltration” in Advanced Functional Materials Journal (IF 19). A new approach of nano-confined supramolecular assembly to fabricate ultrathin crystalline polymer membranes with a modulus of 1 GPa and a thickness of 6.5 nm is reported.
