Initiated by our Dean, Prof. Kenneth Leung, the Sustainable Energy and Environmental Discovery for Students (SEEDS) Mentorship Programme was successfully launched at the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), City University of Hong Kong, on 12 February 2025.
Delving into the realm of sustainable fuel and chemical synthesis within the context of transitioning towards a greener energy landscape, Professor James Durrant captivated audiences during his recent lecture at the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) on 22 January 2025, as part of the esteemed CityUHK Distinguished Visiting Professor Lecture series.
Prof. Fatwa F. Abdi, an Associate Professor from SEE, has been awarded a 3-year research grant from the French National Research Agency (ANR) / Research Grants Council (RGC) Joint Research Scheme, with a total funding amount of HKD 1.7 million. In the current 2024/25 exercise, Prof. Abdi is the only recipient from CityUHK to receive the ANR/RGC Joint Research Scheme Grant.
Congratulations to Prof. Charles Chunbao Xu, Chair Professor, and Prof. Jian Wang, Assistant Professor, on receiving the RGC-Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) and RGC-Young Collaborative Research Grant (YCRG), respectively. The total awarded projects have received funding of over HK$12 million.
From December 27th to 30th, 2024, Prof. Michael LEUNG led a delegation, including PhD students and post-doctoral researchers from the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), to meet with the Changzhou Municipal Science and Technology Bureau and several prestigious enterprises. This exchange visit aimed to promote the deep integration and development of our technological innovation resources with Changzhou's industrial strengths through meaningful exchange and collaboration.
Prof. Sai Kishore Ravi has been elected as a Lifetime Fellow of the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM) in recognition of his significant contributions to materials research, particularly in biohybrid materials and artificial photosynthesis.
On 2 December 2024, a team led by our esteemed Associate Dean (Internationalization and Outreach), Prof. Edwin Tso, and including SEE alumnus Mr. Cheung Tim Yiu, received the Silver Award for the Electricity-free Cooling Technology developed by i2Cool Limited. This technology startup was incubated by City University of Hong Kong's HK Tech 300 and recognized at the Hong Kong Green Innovations Award (HKGIA).
We are thrilled to announce that Ir Dr. Otto Poon has been selected as the recipient of the SEE Outstanding Service Award 2024. This initiative recognizes individuals who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to supporting the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) community over the years.
If we reduce carbon dioxide (CO2), will the climate come back? A new study led by Prof. Jin-Soo Kim and his postdoc, Dr. Hyo-Jeong Kim, found that Southeast Asia, Europe, and Northern Africa may experience more severe fire activity even in climate simulation with reduced CO2 concentrations. It is mainly due to atmospheric dryness maintained by climatic inertia. The exacerbated fire danger is projected to contribute to extra CO2 emissions in 68% of global regions due to the hysteresis of climate responses to CO2 levels.
At the recent SEE Colloquium held on 20 November 2024, the esteemed Cr Terence MANG, the Chairperson of the Youth Affairs Committee at the Construction Industry Council, captivated attendees with an inspiring presentation on “Reflections on Zero Carbon Park: Lesson Learned in the Pursuit of Zero Emissions”.
