Visit to Lamma Power Station on 29 October 2016

A group of 23 students from the undergraduate, master and PhD programmes joined in for a trip to Lamma Island on 29 October 2016 (Saturday) to visit the power plant there. We were led by Ir C.K. Liu, the Chief Operations Engineer at HK Electric during the tour. Ir Liu explained to us the operation of the power plant, including many technical details about steam cycles, combined cycles, etc. We then got a scenic view of the power plant from the top of a hill, and saw how the coal used for the plant was handled and stored. We also visited the control room of one of the generating units, and entered the generator hall to feel the heat from the boiler. The visit was enlightening as we got to see how the power plant actually works, which helps to understand the technical details that were taught in class.
