SEE Hosted Distinguished Lecture on Combatting Microbial Contaminants in Coastal Waters

The School of Energy and Environment (SEE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) recently welcomed Prof. Karina Y. H. Gin, Provost's Chair and Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS), for a distinguished lecture titled “Combatting Microbial Contaminants in Coastal Waters under Climate Change”. The guest speaker was invited by Prof. Xuneng Tong, Assistant Professor of SEE, to share her extensive expertise and pioneering research.

Combatting Microbial Contaminants

Prof. Gin provided valuable insights into the impacts of climate change on microbial water quality and public health risks in coastal environments. She highlighted challenges posed by microbial contaminants such as enterovirus, Enterococcus, and Vibrio bacteria, particularly in recreational waters. Her integrated approach, which combines environmental monitoring and advanced modeling techniques, aims to assess pathogen variability, survival mechanisms, and transport dynamics under shifting climatic conditions.

The lecture concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where SEE faculty, students, and researchers participated in stimulating discussions on strategies for improving coastal water quality. SEE expresses its heartfelt appreciation to Prof. Gin for her enlightening lecture, which reinforced the importance of collaborative research in advancing sustainable water management practices.
