International Workshop on Tropical Climate (IWTC25) Concludes Successfully at CityUHK

The International Workshop on Tropical Climate (IWTC25) was successfully held at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) from 17–19 December 2025, bringing together leading scientists and researchers to advance understanding of tropical climate systems.

Sponsored by the Hong Kong Climate Change Forum (HKCCF) and co-organized with Seoul National University (SNU) and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), the three-day event featured keynote lectures, technical sessions, and a field trip, fostering collaboration on critical topics such as tropical climate dynamics, AI applications in climate studies, and heat extremes under global warming.

The workshop opened with a Welcoming Speech by Ir Dr Otto Poon, BBS, OBE, Founder & Executive Director of ATAL Engineering Group, Past President of HKIE and Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences, and Past Chairman of HKCCF. His remarks highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary efforts in addressing climate challenges in the tropics.

Over the course of the workshop, experts shared insights on tropical cyclone dynamics, monsoon variability, heatwave impacts, and innovative AI-driven forecasting models. Keynote speakers included Prof. Jung-Eun Chu (CityUHK), Prof. Daehyun Kim (SNU), Prof. Xiaoming Shi (HKUST), and Prof. Francis Tam (CUHK), among others.

The event concluded with a field trip to Victoria Peak, offering participants an opportunity to experience Hong Kong’s unique subtropical environment firsthand.

IWTC25 successfully strengthened international collaboration and set the stage for future research initiatives to tackle pressing climate challenges in tropical regions.
