Empowering the Next Generation: SEE Colloquium Explores Policy, Talent, and Innovation in Hong Kong’s Hydrogen Future

The School of Energy and Environment (SEE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) hosted a colloquium titled “Fueling the Future: How We Are Shaping Hong Kong’s Hydrogen Ecosystem” on 29 September 2026. The event featured Ir Gordon Ng, Technical Secretary of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), and was moderated by Prof. Fatwa Abdi, Associate Professor at SEE. The colloquium attracted a full-house audience of SEE faculty, staff, students, and external guests eager to learn about Hong Kong’s progress towards a hydrogen-powered future.

Bringing more than 16 years of government service, Ir Ng shared insights gained from his work in engineering services, project management, business development, and regulatory enforcement. He holds a BEng and an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Hong Kong, as well as an MBA with distinction from CityUHK. He is also a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), and the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM).

In his presentation, Ir Ng provided a comprehensive overview of Hong Kong’s emerging hydrogen ecosystem. Ir Ng highlighted key policy initiatives under the Strategy of Hydrogen Development in Hong Kong, green certification schemes, capacity building, and alignment with national development plans. He also showcased EMSD’s public education efforts, including a hydrogen cartridge and a student-built hydrogen model car, underscoring the importance of cultivating young talent and fostering societal acceptance.

The colloquium concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where attendees actively exchanged views with Ir Ng on policy execution and practical implementation challenges.
