CityUHK Academics Attend National Ecology Day 2026 Launching Ceremony

On 15 August 2026, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) held the National Ecology Day 2026 Launching Ceremony cum Symposium at the Hong Kong Science Museum. The event brought together representatives from the Central People's Government and the HKSAR Governments, scholars, and environmental leaders, and experts to exchange insights on ecological conservation and sustainable development, while officially launching a month-long series of environmental initiatives across the territory.

The launching ceremony was officiated by Mr Cheuk Wing-hing, Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration; Mr Tse Chin-wan, Secretary for Environment and Ecology; Mr Ye Shuiqiu, Deputy Director-General of the Social Development Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; and Dr Starry Lee, Member of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress and President of the Legislative Council.

Representing the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), Professor Kenneth Leung, B.B.S., JP, Vice-President (Research), and Professor Edwin Tso, Associate Dean (Internationalisation and Outreach) of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), attended the event and joined distinguished guests from government, academia, and the environmental sector.

The symposium highlighted major national and local initiatives that support ecological conversation and sustainable development. These included Hong Kong's preparation of a five-year development plan aligned with the National 15th Five-Year Plan to advance carbon reduction efforts, as well as the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and Shenzhen authorities to strengthen cross-boundary collaboration on marine conservation and coral ecosystem protection.

As a leading institution committed to addressing global environmental challenges through research, education, and innovation, CityUHK actively supports initiatives that promote ecological awareness and sustainable development. In alignment with the objectives of National Ecology Day and at the invitation the Environment and Ecology Bureau (EEB), SEE is proud to co-organise the National Ecology Day 2026 cum SEE Tech Talk, themed "Climate Change and Sustainable Development."

The event will be held on 29 August 2026 at CityUHK and will feature presentations by SEE faculty members on climate science, ecology, sea-level change, and pathways towards net-zero emissions. Through sharing cutting-edge research findings and practical solutions, the symposium aims to foster greater public understanding of climate action and sustainability, while encouraging dialogue on addressing pressing environmental challenges facing Hong Kong, the nation, and the world.
