The Advanced Laboratory for Environmental Research and Technology (ALERT), established in Suzhou by the City University of Hong Kong and the University of Science and Technology of China, provides a great opportunity for collaboration between the two universities on research related to the environmental protection, conservation and remediation of Lake Taihu. The laboratory enables important research studies such as qualitative and quantitative determination of contaminants in the various environmental compartments (atmosphere, waters, sediments and biota) of the lake, identification of pollution sources, investigation o the behavior and fate of contaminants in the lake, pollution budgeting, assessment of risk to public health, evaluation of remediation strategies, development of new treatment technology, etc., which are vital to the protection and remediation of Lake Taihu, to be conducted. The laboratory will also be a place for intellectual exchange and collaboration among academia of the two universities and a place to nurture young research scientists and graduate students dedicated for environmental research.
