Professional Experience

Dr. B.L. Luk has extensive industrial experience in various disciplines including

  • Mechatronics,
  • Measurement and control,
  • SCADA and
  • Robotics.

He has applied his knowledge and experience to provide solutions for many difficult industrial problems which cannot be solved easily by off-the-shelf solutions. Some of the examples are:

  • SADIE (Sizewell 'A' nuclear reactor Duct Inspection Equipment) climbing robot, Magnox Electric plc, UK
  • NERO Tele-operated vehicle systems for inspecting Trawsfynydd Nuclear Power Station, Nuclear Electric plc, UK
  • Man amplifier robot system, Portech Ltd, UK
  • Tribot climbing robot for remote inspections of large war ships, B&W Nuclear Technology Ltd, USA

Dr. Luk was also the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator for a number applied research projects and some of the examples include:

  • Co-Investigator of Teleman 44 (Tele-operated Robot for remote inspection in hazardous environments), European Union's Framework IV programme (project value: 500K pounds sterling - 7.3M HKD)
  • Principal Investigator of WIRED (Walking Intelligent Robots using Embedded Control Demonstrator), European Union's Framework IV programme (project value: 300K pounds sterling - 4.35M HKD)
  • Principal Investigator of the project entitled "An Intelligent Control System for Walking-Climbing Robots", EPSRC, UK (project value: 150K pounds sterling - 2.1M HKD)
  • Deputy project coordinator of the project entitled "Development of a mechatronic chess-playing system (UIM-33)", ITF, HK (project value: 1.36M HKD)
  • Deputy project coordinator of the project entitled "Monitoring, Co-ordination Control and Programming System for Home/SOHO Networking and Automation (UIM-55)", ITF, HK (project value: 4.5M HKD)
  • Deputy project coordinator of the project entitled "Wall Inspection/Cleaning Robotic System Based on Automated Gondola Technology (ITS/033/01)", ITF, HK (project value: 2.5M HKD)
  • Deputy project coordinator of the project entitled "An Innovative Wireless Multifunction Stethoscope with its Applications in Telemedicine and Home Healthcare(ITS/99/02)", a joint project with CUHK, ITF, HK (total value: 7.9M HKD, CityU portion: 3.5M HKD)
