Aiming to push the boundaries of human knowledge and provide the transformative technology for our society, the multiscale automation and robotics lab conducts research in the intersections of electrical, mechanical and biomedical engineering, ranging from micro/nano to millimeter scale. The MARs Lab conducts research in medical and soft robotics, micro/nano robotics, and automation at micro/nanometer scales. With a strong belief in interdisciplinary research in electrical, mechanical and biomedical engineering, we innovate and bring together techniques from different areas to invent new tools and technology.

Microrobotic technology has been developed for manipulation of a large number of single cells for many important applications, such as characterizing cell-cell communication for screening drug effects, processing reprodcutive cells for in vitro fertilization (IVF).

The MARs lab has been developing the next-generation of medical devices and automated systems to provide patient-specific solutions and assist medical practitioners in diagnosis and treatments.

Soft Robotics

Using of the “smart” and soft materials, we also explore the soft robotics research with fewer auxiliary sensors and feedback loops to perform sophisticated tasks.


Our PHD students LIU Rui and WANG Min officially joined CityU after working remotely for several months. Hope they continue their excellence.

Our paper by Dr. Sun-Joo Jang was accepted by Advanced Intelligent Systems. Hope the new hybrid training simulator benefit the doctors cardiovascualr treatment.

Our commentary article is accepted by the JTCVS, a flagship journal in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery.

    Minimal Requirement:
  • Bachelor or Master Degree from top-level universities in related areas such as electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechatronics, and automation, etc.
  • GPA: >85/100; Lower GPA is considered ONLY if the candidates have strong publication records.
  • Students with strong research experiences or hands-on skills
  • TOEFL iBT 79^; or IELTS 6.5^
