Large-Area and Freestanding Metal-Based Nanomembrane Electrocatalyst for Sustainable Hydrogen Production

中文版本

Opportunity

The growing demand for sustainable energy solutions has positioned electrochemical water electrolysis as a promising method for hydrogen production, offering benefits such as fast kinetics and high hydrogen purity. However, the widespread adoption of this technology is hindered by the lack of economically efficient and stable catalysts. Platinum (Pt) is renowned for its exceptional catalytic performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but its scarcity and high cost limit its practical application. Existing Pt-based catalysts often require complex, multi-step synthesis processes involving high temperatures or expensive equipment, leading to high production costs and low yield rates. Additionally, conventional Pt catalysts, typically in powdered form, suffer from limited surface area and stability issues. These challenges underscore the urgent need for a cost-effective, scalable, and highly efficient electrocatalyst to enable sustainable hydrogen production at scale.

Technology

This patent introduces an innovative solution: a large-area, freestanding Pt nanomembrane electrocatalyst synthesized via a polymer surface buckling-enabled exfoliation (PSBEE) method. The nanomembrane consists of highly distorted Pt nanocrystals joined by nanosized amorphous carbon interphases, creating a heterogeneous elastic strain field that significantly enhances HER performance. Key innovations include:

  1. Unique Nanostructure: The Pt nanomembranes exhibit lattice expansion and distortion, which optimize the binding energy of hydrogen intermediates, leading to superior catalytic activity compared to commercial Pt/C, Pt foils, or single-atom catalysts.
  2. Cost-Effective Fabrication: The PSBEE method is simple, scalable, and avoids high-temperature processes or expensive equipment. It involves depositing Pt on a polymer scaffold (e.g., polyvinyl alcohol), inducing controlled buckling, and exfoliating the film to produce freestanding nanomembranes with tunable thickness (1–30 nm).
  3. Exceptional Performance: The nanomembranes achieve an overpotential (η10) of 26–29 mV and Tafel slopes of 30–37 mV/dec in acidic electrolytes, outperforming most reported Pt-based catalysts. Their mass activity is orders of magnitude higher than bulk Pt foil while maintaining stability over 100 hours.

Advantages

  • High Efficiency: Ultra-low overpotential and Tafel slopes rivaling state-of-the-art HER catalysts.
  • Low Cost: Material costs are drastically reduced due to ultrathin Pt usage (~10⁻⁴ $/cm² vs. ~10 $/cm² for Pt foil).
  • Scalability: PSBEE enables large-area production (up to cm² scale) with high yield.
  • Stability: Retains performance after prolonged operation (24+ hours at 10 mA/cm²).
  • Binder-Free Design: Eliminates additives that degrade performance over time.

Applications

  • Green Hydrogen Production: As cathodes in proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEM-WE).
  • Fuel Cells: For oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) or HER in renewable energy systems.
  • Industrial Catalysis: Scalable deployment in chemical processing requiring efficient H₂ generation.
  • Research Platforms: Model system for studying strain-engineered electrocatalysis.
