Opportunity
The global shift toward renewable energy has intensified the need for efficient hydrogen production through electrochemical water splitting, as hydrogen serves as a clean energy carrier. Currently, platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalysts dominate hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to their optimal hydrogen adsorption energy. However, Pt exhibits poor stability and significantly reduced performance in non-acidic conditions (e.g., alkaline environments), limiting its practical applications. Additionally, commercial Pt/C catalysts struggle with scalability and high costs. Alternative noble metals like rhodium (Rh) show promise for pH-universal HER but face challenges such as complex synthesis methods, low durability, and insufficient activity compared to Pt. There is a critical need for a cost-effective, scalable, and high-performance HER electrocatalyst that operates efficiently across all pH levels while maintaining long-term stability.
Technology
This patent introduces a novel yolk-shell nanostructure composed of Rh nanoparticles embedded in sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) co-doped carbon shells. The innovation lies in its facile self-template synthesis method, which involves a hydrothermal reaction followed by controlled heat treatment. The yolk-shell design features a porous carbon shell encapsulating Rh nanoparticles, optimizing electron transfer and active site exposure. Key technological breakthroughs include:
- Ultralow overpotential (10–20 mV at 10 mA/cm²) and Tafel slope (20–30 mV/dec), surpassing commercial Pt/C.
- pH-universal performance, with exceptional HER activity in acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions.
- Enhanced durability (>10 hours) due to the protective carbon shell preventing Rh aggregation and corrosion.
- Scalable fabrication using low-cost precursors (RhCl₃ and thiourea) and a simple two-step process (hydrothermal + annealing).
Advantages
- Superior HER performance: Outperforms Pt/C and Rh/C in overpotential, Tafel slope, and turnover frequency (TOF: 0.1–0.3 s⁻¹ at −75 mV).
- Robust stability: Maintains activity over prolonged use (>10 hours) due to yolk-shell structural integrity.
- Low noble metal content: Reduces material costs compared to Pt-based catalysts.
- pH-universal: Works efficiently across pH 0–14, adaptable to diverse electrolyzer systems.
- Scalable synthesis: Simple, reproducible, and cost-effective fabrication.
Applications
- Green hydrogen production: Integration into proton-exchange membrane (PEM) and alkaline electrolyzers.
- Fuel cells: As cathode catalysts for hydrogen oxidation.
- Industrial gas purification: CO and NOx reduction.
- Optical sensors: Leveraging plasmonic properties of Rh nanoparticles.
- Microbial electrolysis: Neutral-pH bioelectrochemical systems.
