Opportunity

Traditional metalens fabrication techniques are plagued by complex manufacturing processes, high costs, and an inability to precisely control lens geometry (e.g., curvature, size, and aspect ratio). These limitations hinder the scalability and customization of metalenses, which are critical for applications requiring sub-wavelength light manipulation, such as high-resolution imaging and compact optical systems. Existing methods struggle to achieve nanoscale precision in lens morphology, often resulting in inconsistent performance or reliance on expensive lithographic techniques. This patent addresses these challenges by introducing a microfluidic-based approach that enables low-cost, high-precision fabrication of metalenses with tailored shapes (e.g., hemispherical or hyper-hemispherical) and superior optical properties.

Technology

The patent proposes a novel microfluidic device integrated with a negative-pressure system to fabricate metalenses. Key innovations include:

  1. Microfluidic Channel and Lens Chamber: A microfluidic channel directs a colloidal solution of high-refractive-index nanoparticles (e.g., TiO₂, ZrO₂, BaTiO₃) into a pre-shaped lens chamber. The chamber’s geometry (e.g., hemispherical) dictates the final lens shape.
  2. Permeable Membrane and Negative-Pressure Evaporation: A semi-permeable membrane separates the lens chamber from a negative-pressure compartment. Solvent from the nanoparticle solution evaporates through the membrane under controlled negative pressure, leaving behind densely packed nanoparticles that form the metalens.
  3. Precision Control: The system allows fine-tuning of lens parameters (e.g., curvature, aspect ratio) by adjusting the chamber design, nanoparticle concentration, and evaporation rate. This method overcomes optical diffraction limits, enabling metalenses to resolve features below 200 nm.

Advantages

  • Cost-Effective: Eliminates expensive lithography or vacuum deposition steps.
  • High Precision: Achieves nanoscale accuracy in lens morphology (e.g., aspect ratios up to 0.64). Scalability: Suitable for mass production via microfluidic automation.
  • Material Flexibility: Compatible with various high-refractive-index nanoparticles (e.g., TiO₂, ZrO₂).
  • Optical Performance: Surpasses diffraction limits, enabling sub-200 nm resolution for microscopy and imaging.

Applications

  • High-Resolution Microscopy: Sub-diffraction-limit imaging for biomedical and materials science.
  • Compact Optical Devices: Ultra-thin lenses for cameras, AR/VR displays, and sensors.
  • Telecommunications: Miniaturized beam-shaping components for photonic circuits.
  • Consumer Electronics: Anti-reflective coatings and lightweight optics in smartphones.
