Opportunity

The development of hydrophobic coatings has been driven by their wide range of applications, including self-cleaning surfaces, anti-fingerprint coatings, and anti-sticking surfaces for medical instruments. However, existing hydrophobic coatings, such as fluorocarbons, silicones, and polymer-based materials, face significant limitations. These materials often exhibit poor wear resistance, low mechanical and thermal stability, and weak adhesion to substrates. For instance, polymer-based coatings like Teflon degrade at temperatures above 300°C, limiting their use in high-temperature environments. Additionally, conventional coatings may involve harmful organic solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), raising environmental and health concerns. In medical applications, such as electrosurgical instruments, the adhesion of charred tissue to blades reduces efficiency and necessitates higher power usage. Similarly, in heat exchangers, water condensation on metal surfaces creates thermal resistance, impairing heat transfer performance. These challenges highlight the need for a durable, environmentally friendly, and thermally stable hydrophobic coating.

Technology

The patent addresses these issues by introducing a method for preparing a cerium oxide (CeO₂) coating using reactive magnetron sputtering from a pure cerium target. This innovative approach leverages the unique properties of cerium oxide, which exhibits exceptional hydrophobicity due to its electron configuration—unfilled 4f orbitals shielded by a full outer electron shell, reducing hydrogen bonding with water molecules. The coating is deposited under specific conditions: a pulsed substrate bias voltage of -60V to -100V at frequencies of 100–350 kHz, a sputtering pressure of 1–5 mTorr, and an oxygen-to-argon flow ratio of 20–100%. The process is performed at room temperature (20–30°C) without external heating, making it energy-efficient. The resulting CeO₂ coating is transparent, hydrophobic (water contact angle ~110°), and exhibits remarkable mechanical properties, including a hardness of ~18 GPa and wear resistance three orders of magnitude higher than Teflon. Its thermal stability (up to 900°C in air) and strong adhesion to substrates (achieving HF1 quality in Rockwell-C tests) make it suitable for harsh environments.

Advantages

  • Environmentally Friendly: No organic solvents or VOCs are required.
  • High Performance: Combines hydrophobicity, transparency, and mechanical durability.
  • Thermal Stability: Retains properties at temperatures up to 900°C, unlike polymer-based coatings.
  • Wear Resistance: Wear volume is three orders of magnitude lower than Teflon.
  • Strong Adhesion: Achieves HF1 quality in adhesion tests, preventing delamination.
  • Versatile Deposition: Suitable for large-scale industrial production with high deposition rates (up to 30 nm/min).

Applications

  • Medical Instruments: Reduces tissue adhesion in electrosurgical blades, improving efficiency.
  • Heat Exchangers: Minimizes water condensation and enhances heat transfer in appliances like refrigerators.
  • Corrosion Protection: Extends the lifespan of metal surfaces in corrosive environments.
  • Optical Devices: Transparent coatings for touch screens, solar panels, and self-cleaning glass.
  • Marine and Construction: Anti-fouling coatings for ships and pollution-resistant building materials.
