Opportunity
The increasing demand for lithium resources has led to soaring prices, raising concerns about the affordability and scalability of large-scale energy storage systems. Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are emerging as a promising alternative due to the abundance and low cost of sodium. However, the practical application of SIBs is hindered by the limitations of cathode materials, particularly in terms of capacity, stability, and energy density. Conventional sodium-rich cathode materials suffer from rapid capacity decay during long cycling, oxygen release at high voltages, and irreversible structural changes. These issues stem from the instability of oxygen redox reactions and the lack of effective strategies to enhance the reversibility of these reactions. Addressing these challenges is critical to developing high-performance SIBs for commercial use.
Technology
The patent introduces a doping-modied sodium-rich cathode material with the chemical formula NaₓLiᵧMg_zMn₁₋ᵧ₋zO₂ (0.5 < x ≤ 1, 0 < y ≤ 0.33, 0 < z ≤ 0.16). The material features a P2-type layered structure where sodium layers alternate with transition metal layers. Lithium (Li) and manganese (Mn) are ordered in the transition metal layer, while magnesium (Mg) is doped into this layer to form strong ionic bonds with oxygen. The innovation lies in two key aspects: (1) Li incorporation adjusts the hybridization energy levels of oxygen orbitals, enabling redox reactions at high voltages; (2) Mg doping strengthens the Mn-O bonds via ionic interactions, enhancing the reversibility of oxygen redox reactions. This dual modication signicantly improves energy density, specic capacity (~272 mAh/g at 0.1C), and cycling stability (92% retention after 100 cycles). The material is synthesized via a solid-state method using cost-effective precursors like Na₂CO₃ and MnO₂, ensuring scalability and environmental friendliness.
