CityUHK x Sino GCSP: Empowering Global Citizens Through Experiential Learning

GCSP

With the steadfast support of Sino Group, the CityUHK x Sino Grand Challenges Scholars Program (GCSP) continues to empower students to extend their learning beyond the classroom and take meaningful action as global citizens.

From 6 to 15 June 2025, thirteen students from the College of Engineering and the College of Science participated in a meaningful community service and experiential learning trip to Malaysia, organised by Engineers Without Borders Hong Kong. During the ten-day trip, they applied their expertise to construct two rainwater harvesting systems and participated in mangrove planting—addressing sustainability challenges while fostering a deeper sense of environmental responsibility.

This experience embodies the core mission of the GCSP, an initiative launched by the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, which aims to nurture future leaders through five key pillars: research, interdisciplinary learning, entrepreneurship, global vision and service-learning. In 2016, CityUHK became the first university in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area to be approved to participate in this program, demonstrating the University’s longstanding commitment to providing students with exceptional practical learning platforms.

Thanks to the generous support of Sino Group from 2021 to 2027, the program is funding outstanding students from the College of Engineering and the College of Science to participate in overseas summits, service-learning trips and summer research projects. Since 2023, 25 students have benefited from these valuable opportunities, applying their knowledge to address global challenges in communities both in Hong Kong and abroad.
