About CIWEM & Career Pathways for Graduates

CIWEM is the only Royal Chartered professional body based in the UK dedicated to the water and environment sector, representing and supporting a community of thousands of members globally, devoted to improving water and environmental management and associated social and cultural issues.

Accreditation of our programme means that our graduates who hold an accredited BEng or BSc degree from any of the 19 Washington Accord signatories will have partially satisfied the academic requirements of CIWEM, and will only need an equivalent professional experience to apply for Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) under the Engineering Council and Society for the Environment (SocEnv) in the UK after acquiring the 14 Mandatory Competencies of CIWEM (guidance available on the CIWEM webpage: https://www.ciwem.org/membership/how-to-become-a-cwem). CEng holders can then apply as Chartered Engineer in Chemical, Civil, Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering disciplines at The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) through the Reciprocal Recognition Agreement (RRA).

Students enrolled in SEE programme are eligible for free Student Membership of CIWEM. Upon graduation, graduates can be transferred from Student Membership to Graduate Membership. CIWEM also has a local branch in Hong Kong, the only one in Asia, which offers numerous events, technical visits, workshops, and opportunities for professional development.
