To mark the start of the event, a 10-member delegation from the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), comprising invited faculty speakers and staff, arrived to initiate the School's active participation. A headline feature of the opening programme was a presentation on the Impact Stage by Prof. Benjamin Horton, Dean of SEE, and Chair Professor of Earth Science, titled "Why Antarctica matters to Asia's climate and coastal future." During the session, Prof. Horton explained that Antarctica's accelerating ice loss directly drives global sea-level rise, increasing flooding and storm surge risks across Asian coastal cities. He emphasized that polar changes heavily disrupt the weather systems affecting Asia, making continued research critical for regional infrastructure planning and climate adaptation.
