Colloquium: Precision Synthesis and Probe of heterogeneous interface

ABSTRACT

Novel electric and magnetic properties can be achieved in materials engineered at nanometer dimensions. The emergence of new functionalities is attributed to the atomic, charge, spin, or orbital structure of the heterointerface. By comprehending the intricacies of interface structures, it becomes possible to manipulate electric and magnetic degrees of freedom, ideally at room temperature. This control facilitates the realization of synthetic magnetoelectric coupling in nanocomposites or the regulation of spin textures in quantum heterostructures. In this presentation, I aim to introduce the intriguing phenomenon of oxide interfaces as an appetizer, followed by a detailed exploration of our recent research on emergent phenomena at transition metal nitride interfaces. This includes: The observation of an electronic state transition in highly crystalline antiferromagnetic CrN films under strain and reduced dimensionality [1,2]. The identification of a substantial exchange bias at the interfaces between a ferromagnetic Fe3N and an antiferromagnetic CrN [3]. The induction of a large magnetic moment at high-quality nitride ferromagnetic/superconducting interfaces [4]. We anticipate that these findings on nitride heterointerfaces will kindle significant interest in the rapidly evolving field, fostering a deeper understanding of magnetic proximity behaviors at quantum heterointerfaces for future spintronic devices.
