Opportunity

Current wearable devices for detecting thumb-to-index-finger (T2I) microgestures face significant limitations. Existing solutions, such as millimeter-wave radar, RGB cameras, or motion sensors, are often bulky, obtrusive, or lack accuracy due to occlusion issues and the small range of thumb motions. These limitations hinder natural, efficient, and privacy-preserving interactions in applications like text input, AR/VR control, and IoT device manipulation. Additionally, conventional systems struggle with real-time tracking of continuous 1D movements (e.g., sliding a thumb along the index finger) and fail to adapt to individual wearer variations (e.g., hand size or finger length). There is a clear need for a compact, high-precision wearable device that leverages advanced sensing and machine learning to address these challenges while maintaining usability and social acceptability.

Technology

The patent introduces an interactive ring-shaped wearable device that combines electric field sensing with machine learning (ML) to detect and analyze microgestures and continuous thumb movements. The device comprises:
1. Multi-layered electrode design: A receiving electrode layer (arranged in a matrix along a curved path), a transmitting electrode layer, and a ground electrode layer embedded in insulating materials. This configuration optimizes sensitivity by measuring capacitance changes caused by finger movements.
2. ML-based gesture recognition:
- A first ML model classifies discrete microgestures (e.g., taps, swipes) using channel-wise and temporal gradient features extracted from sensor data.
- A second ML model tracks continuous 1D thumb positions via regression techniques (e.g., k-NN or SVR).
3. Adaptive training methods: The system employs data augmentation (e.g., random offsets) and personalized calibration to account for wearer-specific variations in hand morphology.

The innovation lies in the fusion of hardware (curved-path electrodes for ergonomic fit) and software (gradient-based feature extraction + ML models), enabling precise, real-time gesture recognition without external cameras or large sensors.

Advantages

  • High Accuracy: Achieves 94%+ recognition accuracy for microgestures by leveraging spatial-temporal signal features.
  • Compact Design: Ring form factor is unobtrusive and socially acceptable compared to gloves or wristbands.
  • Real-Time Tracking: Custom Kalman filters smooth regression outputs for seamless 1D motion estimation.
  • Adaptability: Personalized models adjust for individual finger lengths/sizes via small calibration datasets.
  • Low Power: Electric field sensing consumes less energy than optical or radar-based systems.

Application

  • AR/VR Control: Enables subtle gestures for navigation or object manipulation in virtual environments.
  • Mobile Interaction: Text input or app control via thumb swipes/taps on the index finger.
  • IoT Device Commanding: Controls smart home devices with predefined gestures (e.g., circles for lights).
  • Accessibility Tools: Assists visually impaired users with tactile feedback-based interfaces.
