A project led by Professor Kenneth Leung Mei-yee, titled “The UN-endorsed Global Estuaries Monitoring (GEM) Programme: Occurrence and environmental risks of contaminants of emerging concern in the world's estuaries”, was awarded funding from the Research Grants Council (RGC) under the Research Impact Fund (RIF) 2025/26.

The RIF encourages local scholars to actively consider the broader implications of their research, enabling broader community benefits, while promoting more influential and applicable research projects in local universities. It also encourages collaboration beyond academia, including partnerships with government agencies, industry and research organisations.

A total of 4 research projects led by CityUHK have been awarded RIF, ranking first among the 8 UGC-funded universities in both the number of projects and funding amount.
