Showcase of Kunqu Opera Classic Excerpts
Southeast Asian Mask

Kunqu opera is sung in Kunqiang, also known as Kunqu. It was popular in Kunshan, Suzhou, during the Yuan and Ming dynasties. After being improved and refined by scholars in the Ming dynasty, it evolved into an artistic treasure that combines elegance and delicacy, offering audiences a profound and impactful viewing experience. Many classic excerpts from Kunqu have remained popular over the centuries because of the art form’s integration of multiple elements, including literature, music, dance and martial arts. This unique blend transforms lyrics and abstract words into melodies, songs and pictures, creating poetic and picturesque aesthetic effects that captivate the audience.

The performance group for this program, the Kunshan Kunqu Opera Theater, is dedicated to promoting the inheritance and development of Kunqu. The classic repertoires performed by the actors include The Peony Pavilion: A Dream in the Garden, Fifteen Strings of Cash: A Visit, and The Tiger Bag: The Gate of the Mountain. The stage will feature a simple setup of one table and two chairs, creating an abstract space. From delicate and graceful scenes to the powerful body movements, the actors will display diverse effects and acting styles. With both visual form and connotation, this performance promises to be a wonderful and unforgettable performance.
